Rachel Poon

Rachel is a first-year law student (1L) with an undergraduate degree in urban planning from the University of Waterloo. She is interested in the intersection of law, smarts cities innovation, and its future impacts on society. She is fascinated by the ability of new technology to reshape the future of sustainable climate change solutions for smart cities. However, to achieve it, a careful balance of different societal values must be governed and prioritized, for optimal urban solutions while minimizing what rights the public must forgo to enjoy them. She believes this is where the law and ethics can be explored to protect the values of society between the great urban planning ideals and new technological solutions.

As a Technoship fellow on the CRAiEDL team, she is happy for the unique opportunity to be acquainted with the ever-changing world of law, technology and its seemingly invisible impacts on society with some of the leading minds in this area of law.

Outside of the lab, she can be found recreating healthy recipes from the Bon Appetite magazines for friends or using watercolour to paint her favourite plants!
