COVIDSafe

History and Context of COVIDSafe

Australia’s COVIDSafe app is built on the same OpenTrace protocol developed by Singapore. Australia led the charge in digital contact tracing as one of the first countries to implement an exposure notification app. Over the summer there were rumors that Australia might transition COVIDSafe from OpenTrace to the GAEN design, however these conversations have since been abandoned.

App-Specific Legislation

Australia has legally supported its digital contact tracing efforts with the Biosecurity Determination 2020 and the Privacy Amendment (Public Health Contact Information) Bill 2020.
