In April 2020, Alberta Health launched ABTraceTogether, a contact tracing app developed by Deloitte and built on Singapore’s OpenTrace API. While this technology was still relatively new in May, it took some time for users to realize that the app was difficult to use on iPhones. ABTraceTogether only worked on iPhones when the app was open on the screen. This took away from the convenience of the app since users could not realistically leave it in their pocket. Alberta Health hoped to collaborate with Apple and get this issue fixed. Instead, Apple partnered with Google to create the Google/Apple Exposure Notification API.
Our team began to expect a Federal response. Canada’s COVID Alert App was announced on June 18 when the Federal government committed to a completely voluntary exposure notification app. COVID Alert has since been developed by the Canadian Digital Service, Shopify volunteers, and Blackberry employees. On July 31st, 2020 COVID Alert was launched alongside a Privacy Review from the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada. COVID Alert is built on the GAEN API and does not include any additional data collection.
