Covid Tracker

History and Context of Covid Tracker

Ireland’s Covid Tracker app was one of the first apps to add extra functionality on to the GAEN API. Covid Tracker not only alerts users of possible contacts, but also allows users to track their symptoms and get advice on how to protect themselves and others. The app’s website also notably diplays images of what alerts will look like so users can know what to look for. While the app’s default setting is to protect the identities of their users, the developers were aware of the value that de-anonymized data possesses and therefore they added the option for users to identify themselves to whatever degree they choose. The app can collect your phone number, demographics, and health-related data if the user provides it. A user’s IP address is automatically collected and immediately deleted. Additionally, users can delete the app and their data at any time. Covid Tracker is now interoperable with Germany’s Corona-Warn-App and Italy’s Immuni App
