Smittestopp

History and Context of Smittestopp

Norway’s contact tracing app, Smittestopp, was implemented and then suspended due to threats to user privacy. The Norwegian Data Protection Authority reported that the app had the potential for uploading users’ location information. At one time Smittestopp had 1.6 million downloads, making up 10% of Norway’s population. Improvements are being made to the app, including separating the analysis and infection tracking technologies. Authorities have continued testing these improvements since August, though an official re-launch date has not been mentioned.
