Ehteraz

History and Context of Ehteraz

Qatar took an interesting approach with its contact tracing app. Originally, the country’s app, Ehteraz, was mandatory. Those who chose not to download the app and turn it on when outside of their homes would face a $55,000 fine or three years in prison. The app used GPS and Bluetooth technology for location tracking. Unfortunately, Amnesty International’s Security Lab found vulnerabilities that could allow cyber attackers to access personal information from the app. Government authorities quickly fixed the security issues. Ehteraz is one of the only non-voluntary apps deployed worldwide.
