Ethical Design Tools for Robotics & AI

Exploring and explicating various ethical concepts, principles and issues are only the starting point when it comes to ethical engineering. Empowering engineers, computer scientists, data scientists (and other technologists) to engage in meaningful ethical design requires providing the practical tools and techniques to bring those ethical aspects of technology into the design room. At CRAiEDL, we are researching various tools and frameworks to support responsible innovation in robotics and AI. Whether it’s Metaphor Hacking, Ethics Settings, Value Maps, or Social Failure Mode Analysis, the tools we are developing are intended to deeply integrate ethical considerations in the design process.

Automated Vehicles and the Future of Mobility

Automation technologies are fundamentally changing mobility and our relationship with driving, raising new and challenging ethical and legal questions. How should engineers, city planners, and policymakers respond to these new technologies? What tools are needed to empower engineers to develop automated mobility systems responsibly, given the various ethical values (e.g. privacy, fairness, responsibility) and democratic ideals (e.g. legitimacy, fundamental rights) we consider important in a mobility system? At CRAiEDL, we are exploring the various impacts that automated vehicles could have on individuals and society, and developing policy recommendations and tools to help define and shape responsible innovation in the mobility space.
